It has been clear to me for some time that vitamin D3 was important in preventing and curing many types of cancer. The problem is I could not figure out how it was doing this. So despite wanting to blog about this since I did not understand exactly how vitamin D3 works both in preventing cancer and curing it, I could not.

Preventing and curing many cancers is a big claim, but anecdotally I have seen it personally and, in my patients. This was when I practiced interventional and medical chronic pain management. My personal experience with cancer started before I saw the effects of optimal dosing and blood levels on cancer.

As a year before I started on my quest with optimal blood plasma levels of vitamin D3 I developed a dermal skin cancer (approximately 5 mm x 7 mm). It was skin level and next to the hair line on my right temple region.

Of course, as a medical doctor I was in denial, so I ignored it. Common in me. When I first started maintaining optimal blood levels of vitamin D3 I did not think about this tumor. As at that point I had little understanding of what vitamin D3 was capable of. This was early 2010.

At the time I did not know it could or would affect cancers. As time passed and by maintaining optimal blood plasma levels of vitamin D3 for years I woke up one day to realize it was gone. A surprising result to me. Later I had other patients, friends and family having total regression of their cancers.

All anecdotal of course. Also what I thought was new to science, but I recently came to find out that for a while in the mid to earlier twentieth century cancer was commonly used to treat cancer. I cannot though find any research articles about this. So I have no references to support this.

So now I can write about vitamin D3 and cancer as I have a sufficient understanding of how vitamin D3 is involved in many caners. Of course more research is needed and hopefully that research will be done with optimal dosing and more importantly blood levels of vitamin D3.

In this series of blog posts I will try to explain my understanding of how vitamin D3 is involved in cancer prevention, progression, and cure. I came to understand the key to how vitamin D3 does this after my review of the scientific literature. This was while researching the CYP24A1 gene and hypercalcemia.

In my review of the scientific literature I found that the interaction between vitamin D3, cancer cells and the CYP24A1 gene was the key. In these posts I will focus on the CYP24A1 gene as it appears to be the most important gene in cancer progression.

Though there are other genes involved in downgrading the effects of vitamin D3 on fighting cancer cells. Here I will try to explain my, understanding of how cancer cells protect themselves from the body’s immune system by manipulating the CYP24A1 gene.

How cancer cells appear to use the cells genes the CYP24A1 gene to survive by destroying the active form of vitamin D3 (1,25 dihydroxy vitamin D3). As the active form of vitamin D3 is key to preventing cancer cells from surviving.

I will discuss how the blood plasma levels of vitamin D3 (25 hydroxy vitamin D3) as well as some of the other forms of vitamin D3 that have activity, though typically significantly less, at the vitamin D receptor (VDR). It is my theory all these biologically active forms of vitamin D3 are critical for maximizing vitamin D3’s autocrine immune function. Especially at optimal blood plasma levels.

That is how the combined function of vitamin D3 in its active and other forms can act in the cells (autocrine function) through the VDR to kill cancer cells. Also I will discuss what is known and my theories on the ways that cancer cells try to neutralize the active form of vitamin D3.

This is done to neutralize the cells autocrine immune effects. Also how certain people due to genetic defects may be prone to developing and having more aggressive forms of cancer. Also genetic defects that will make them less prone to developing cancer and/or aggressive forms.

Also I will list all the many different known types of cancers that are able to neutralize the active form of vitamin D3 and  the intracellular immune system. Thus preventing cellular apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells.

That is the autocrine functions of the immune system functions of the active and I believe other active forms of vitamin D3 are responsible for in neutralizing certain cancers.
