What is the Madison-HannaH Effect? It is the name I have given to all the processes that the body activates once there is an optimal blood level of vitamin D3. It’s when there is more than enough to meet the body’s needs to assure adequate blood calcium levels to prevent osteoporosis. Preventing this requires a much higher blood level than to prevent rickets for which currently the D3 RDA is recommended.

As mentioned in the previous post, an adult body can maintain adequate calcium levels at astonishingly low vitamin D levels. The bones pay the price with osteoporosis, and the body goes into Winter Syndrome mode and starts more rapidly deteriorating. The lower the vitamin D3 blood level, the faster the decline. Often other factors are involved in these associated diseases, but that makes it easier for naysayers to discount vitamin D3’s effect. This Winter Syndrome is not yet recognized by the medical community at large. Curiously, I am not aware of one disease other than rickets that is recognized by the medical community associated with vitamin D3 deficiency.

Well, once the blood levels of vitamin D3 rise above the level to maintain calcium levels that maintain bone health, there is enough vitamin D3 to diffuse into the rest of the cells in the body to initiate the Madison-HannaH effect. You see, almost every cell has the vitamin D receptor where this effect is initiated. The body isn’t wasteful and would not have done this if it wasn’t important. No, we don’t know a great deal about this receptor but the reason research needs to be done at optimal doses instead of current RDA are that previous research done showed negative results. No surer way to discredit something that to test it at doses that are sure to fail.

The reason I know this is because I have seen the effects clinically from thousands of patients that I treated for over close to 8 years with increased doses of vitamin D3. It wasn’t an accident that patients lost large amounts of weight, their allergies ceased, no one contracted the flu in the winter, patient’s osteoporosis resolved or they suddenly had the best sleep in decades, among other health improvements because of the what I call Madison-HannaH Effect.

Dr. Somerville, did you find a need to recommend K2 to patients on the ODA of D3?
